Problematic Sexual Behavior – 15 Years of Trailblazing Treatment

February 21, 2025

In 2010, our community made a bold and compassionate commitment to address the complex and often misunderstood issue of problematic sexual behavior (PSB) in children and adolescents. As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Problematic Sexual Behavior Program at Dee Norton Child Advocacy Center, we reflect on its history, mission, and the vital role this treatment plays in promoting awareness, prevention, and healing.

A Brief History of the Program

In the early 2000s, the Lowcountry multi-disciplinary team recognized a significant gap in services for families navigating the challenges of PSB. Traditional treatment models often failed to meet the unique needs of these children and their families, leaving many without the support necessary for effective intervention and healing. In response, the Dee Norton Child Advocacy team launched the Problematic Sexual Behavior Program in 2010. Grounded in evidence-based practices, our family-focused approach provided the foundation for this much-needed program.

Initially modeled after groundbreaking research and treatment protocols developed by leaders in the field, the program has since evolved to incorporate the latest advancements in trauma-informed care. Over the years, we’ve engaged with schools and community organizations to promote awareness and prevention. In addition, we’ve trained clinicians and partnered with families to ensure that children exhibiting PSB receive compassionate, effective, and developmentally appropriate care and intervention.

What is the Problematic Sexual Behavior Program?

Our PSB program is designed to provide specialized treatment for children and adolescents who exhibit behaviors that are developmentally inappropriate and/or potentially harmful to themselves or others. The program takes a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to include group therapy in addition to family education and support. Central to our passion and philosophy is the belief that children are capable of change and that caregivers play a critical role in fostering this transformation.

Key Components of the Program Include:

  • Assessment and Intervention: Comprehensive evaluations to understand the family’s needs and customized treatment plans.
  • Evidence-Based Therapy: Utilizing proven methods such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to address underlying issues and promote healthy behavior.
  • Family Involvement: Providing caregivers with the tools and resources needed to support their child’s progress and strengthen family dynamics.
  • Community Education: Raising awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding PSB through workshops and collaboration with local organizations.

Why This Program Matters

The importance of addressing PSB can’t be overstated. With timely and effective treatment, children exhibiting PSB can learn to develop healthy relationships, build self-regulation skills, and thrive within their families and communities.

Moreover, our PSB program helps reduce stigma while fostering a deeper understanding of childhood development, including sexual development. By treating PSB as a behavioral health issue rather than a moral failing, we’ve been able to shift the narrative from blame and shame to hope and healing. This compassionate and comprehensive approach not only benefits the children in treatment, but our community by promoting empathy, resilience, and safety.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate 15 years, this milestone serves to remind us of the countless lives impacted by our program. We honor the courage of the children and families who have walked through our doors, the dedication of our staff and partners, and the vision of those who recognized the need for this essential service.

Looking to the future, we remain committed to enhancing our services, expanding our reach, and continuing to advocate for the children and families affected by PSB. Together, we can build a bridge that connects Lowcountry children and youth to a brighter tomorrow.
